how to make a woven bracelet with beads?
Detailed Steps to Make a Beaded Weave Bracelet
Preparation Materials:
- Beads: Choose colors and sizes based on personal preference.
- Weaving Thread: It's recommended to use soft and durable waxed thread, and again, pick a color that suits your taste.
- Scissors
- Lighter (for melting and securing the thread ends)
- Holder or Clamps (to secure the thread and beads during the process)
Steps:
-
Measuring & Securing:
- Cut a piece of weaving thread long enough to serve as the center thread, leaving approximately 15cm (6 inches) of excess at each end (adjust this length according to your wrist size).
- String the beads onto the center thread until you reach the desired length. Secure both ends of the thread onto a holder or clamp to prevent the beads from sliding off.
-
Starting Knot:
- Take a second piece of weaving thread as the tying thread.
- Use the tying thread to tie several overhand knots around the center thread, securing the beads in place. If you're unfamiliar with overhand knots, refer to my previous blog post for instructions.
-
Adding Beads & Weaving:
- Slide one bead up to the top of the center thread (close to the knotted end).
- Pass the threads on the left and right sides of the bead through from opposite sides, then cross them beneath the bead to form a loop.
- Tighten this loop and continue weaving in the same manner, weaving through each added bead three times, until the bracelet reaches the desired length.
-
Adjusting Length & Finishing:
- Once the bracelet is close to or reaches your wrist size, stop adding beads and tie several overhand knots to secure the last bead.
- Remove the bracelet from the holder and leave enough excess thread at each end for the clasp.
-
Making an Adjustable Clasp:
- Create an adjustable clasp using a larks' head knot or any other familiar knotting technique you prefer.
-
Decoration & Final Touches:
- Add two beads to each end of the bracelet as decoration, securing them with the same weaving technique used earlier.
- Finally, use a lighter to melt and secure all thread ends, being careful not to burn yourself. Press gently to flatten the melted ends.
Tips:
- For your first attempt, consider using larger beads and thicker thread for easier handling.
- Maintain a steady hand throughout the weaving process to avoid crossed or tangled threads.
- When using a lighter to treat the thread ends, exercise caution around the flame to prevent burns.
